Trapped in an Unhealthy Bond

Trauma bonding is when a person feels strongly attached to someone who hurts them. This happens because bad treatment is mixed with moments of kindness or apology, which creates confusion and emotional dependence. Even though the relationship is unhealthy, the person may find it very hard to leave.

Trauma bonding is a psychological attachment that forms between a person and someone who harms or mistreats them, often through cycles of abuse followed by affection, remorse, or reassurance. The bond develops because intense emotional pain becomes intertwined with moments of relief or care, making the relationship feel powerful and hard to leave. Over time, fear, dependency, and hope for change can keep the bond intact, even when the relationship is damaging.
